If you’ve been the go-to person for everyone and everything—scheduling, organizing, and holding it all together—it’s no surprise your family might not immediately get why exercise or eating healthier is so important to you.
Before diving into how to get everyone on board, it’s helpful to understand where your loved ones are coming from. Change is tough for everyone and can stir up some resistance -here’s why:
- Resistance: Any new habit—like adding exercise to your routine—might throw off the family routines or traditions you’ve all come to expect.
- Misunderstanding: Your family might not fully grasp why this matters to you, or how it impacts your overall happiness and health.
- Fear: Seeing you take on a healthier lifestyle might make them worried they’ll have to change, too—and let’s face it, no one loves change!
- Stress: Sometimes, outside stresses unrelated to your goals can cause frustration, making it harder for your loved ones to be supportive.
The key to getting your family on the same page (or at least easing some of the tension) is clear, honest communication. The golden rule = speaking from the heart, sharing your goals in a way they can relate and keeping it real.
Here are 6 tips for working through these challenges:
#1. Share Your Why: Whether it’s to feel more energized, boost confidence or live a healthier life—explain your goals and why this is important: “I’ve decided to make my health a priority. I want to feel more energetic, more confident, and just be the best version of myself—for all of us!”
#2. Acknowledge Feelings: Changing routines is tough for everyone. Recognize feelings and concerns to show empathy and make the transition smoother:
“I know switching up our meals might be a little different, but I appreciate your feeedback and patience as we adjust together.”
#3. Ask for Support: Instead of asking for general support, specifiy your needs: “Would you mind watching the kids while I workout? That time helps me recharge!”
#4. Know Your Limits: Whether it’s healthier meals or skipping certain foods, define your limits: “I’m skipping fast food but totally up for grilled options or fresh salads.”
#5. Stay Consistent: Being consistency shows your committment and helps others respect boundaries: “My workout schedule is on the family calendar.”
#6. Be Assertive + Kind: Stand firm in your choices without getting defensive. Your family will respect your commitment when you stay positive and open-minded:
“Thanks for the dinner suggestion, but I’ve got my meal plan set. How about we come up with a healthy alternative together?”
By keeping the lines of communication open and staying true to your goals, you’ll create a healthy, supportive environment for your journey—and it’ll be even more fun with your family in your corner. It’s all about finding that balance and moving forward together!

STRATEGIES FOR SUCCESS!
Reagrdless of your goal, success is two-fold:
First, its’ about focusing on self-motivation and personal accountability— the things you have full control of and can do on your own:
#1. Set Clear Goals: Break down your goal into smaller, manageable milestones. Instead of aiming to lose 50 pounds, set a goal to lose 5 pounds per month. This can be hard to do on your own and something we as your coaches can guide so it’s manageable and realistic!
#2. Track Progress: Use journals, apps (MyFitnessPal and Fitbits) or spreadsheets to log food, exercise routines and progress. At Results Fitness, we track your weights and performance to ensure you are progressing and perform Inbody scans for tracking changes in your body composition (weight, muscle and body fat mass).
#3. Celebrate Wins: Acknowledge and reward milestones, no matter how small! Maybe yout hit 3 workouts consistently or ate home cooked meals all week! Being part of a community like Results Fitness makes this part all the sweeter as your workout buddies are there to celebrate with you!
#4. Visualize Success: Keep your “why’ top of mind: your biggest motivator for making a change and striving to get 1% better. As a mom of 2, my “why” is my kiddos and making sure they have a strong as hell mom for many many years to come <3
Next, build your ”empire of support!”
This includes working through challenges as your family adapts to your new routines plus garnering additional support so you have everything you need to become the best version of you!
#5. Make it a Family Affair!
- Try Healthy Recipes: Introduce meals the whole family can enjoy like homemade veggie pizzas or smoothies. I share family friendly, kid approved recipes every Friday!
- Get Active Together: Plan family activities like hikes, scavenger hunts, bike rides, tag, or kickball games!
- Attend Events: Try family friendly exercise classes, participate in a local 5k (walk, jog or run) or bikeathon, or have some fun with a cooking class! Resutls Fitness is full of families and couples who exercise together!
- Share Results: Talk about your progress and the results so your family sees the positive effects–weight loss, increased energy levels and improved mood– and are inspired to join you!
#6. Join a Support Group: Online or in-person support groups provide community and understanding from those facing similar struggles. Becoming part of a community like Results Fitness allows you to be surrounded by people just like you, with similar goals and challenges. There is strength in numbers and we are strongest, together!
#7. Hire a Coach: A personal trainer and nutrition coach provides personalized guidance, support and motivation; filling in the gaps as to what’s missing at home.
Here at Results Fitness, your coaches are your #1 cheerleaders –wanting nothing more than your personal success, health and happiness! Together, we help you push through barriers, feel empowered and gain the strength and confidence to feel and be your best!
#8. Engage Friends: Reach out to friends who are supportive, share your goals and open to doing this with you. Research shows exercising and building healthy habits with a buddy makes you more successful!
Best plae to start? Come make some new friends here at Results Fitness – our community loves meeting new faces and making you feel at home!
[I promise we don’t bite!]
As a coach, I see how sharing struggles and celebrating wins together makes a huge difference all the time. Many of our Warriors start Results Fitness solo but end up building lasting friendships with others that fuel motivation, consistency and success!
#8. Seek Professional Help: If lack of support is causing significant stress or emotional strain, consider speaking to a therapist or counselor.

As you embark on your health and fitness journey or press forward with what you’re already doing, it’s important to always practice patience, persistence and kindness when building your empire of support!
Remember, change doesn’t happen overnight, and it might take time for your family to adjust! The more consistent you are and the more boundaries you set, the faster your family will adapt and buy-in.
And if/where needed, try the different strategies outlined above and adjust as needed. For example, if morning workouts prove too difficult for your family routine and schedule, switch to evening sessions.
Lastly, stay persistent and positive!
Even when faced with setbacks or resistance, keep pushing forward with your healthy habits. Focus on the benefits you’re experiencing, such as increased energy or improved mood, to stay motivated, knowing it’s only leading you to the best version of yourself!
