Being a Dad: How to Find the Time and Strength

“You won’t find judging eyes or gym bros at Results Fitness. What you will find is a team of professionals dedicated to helping you succeed and a tribe of friends to inspire you and celebrate your victories.”

— RF Warrior Chris
Meet Chris – better known among the Results Fitness Community as the unofficial “Cruise Director”.

Without hesitation, we’d describe Chris as passionate, genuine and enthusiastic!

His visible enthusiasm at the gym to put in the work and sweat up a storm during Group and Semi-Private workouts pushes us all to be a little more bold and a wee bit daring. Especially while sporting his favorite costume for Halloween!

His passion to be the best while bringing out the best in others evokes community, fun and warmth around the gym. He’s the type of guy you genuinely want to be around and his positive spirit spreads endless smiles – even when sleds are involved!

As a dad, husband, friend, avid gamer, and workout enthusiast, how does Chris make all this shit work?

“I think that small feeling of guilt for taking time out of your day to focus on yourself is always there to some extent. The time to get ready, drive to the gym, attend class, drive back – it does add up. You think about the time you could be devoting to the family or putting in that extra effort on your work project.

But every time those thoughts pop up, they are pretty quickly squashed by the understanding I’m making an investment that will benefit all of those things more. If I’m healthier and happier, I will be making a better version of myself available to my family, friends and colleagues.”

His commitment to being the very best dad sets a strong precedent at the homestead as the family rock and superhero. But how does this Dad find the time and strength? What’s his #1 piece of advice for fellow fathers struggling with striking a balance?

RF: THINK BACK TO WHEN YOU JOINED RESULTS FITNESS. WHAT WAS YOUR GREATEST FEAR?
Chris: I think I had a couple of fears in the back of my mind:

Not keeping up with the class- I’d either end up making a fool of myself or would be stupid and get injured trying to keep up with some of the younger members.

Unsure whether a gym was the right thing for me. I live about 30 minutes away, so it was a big commitment in terms of time.

Having always worked out solo, jumping in to Group Training felt a little daunting, especially since I’m naturally more introverted.

RF: HOW DID YOU CONQUER YOUR FEAR?
Chris: I decided to give the 30 Day Kickstart a try and even after my initial Strategy Session, I was feeling a little more comfortable. The coaches spent a lot of time figuring out where I was fitness wise and more importantly, listened to learn about my goals and concerns.

After the first class, I knew I had made the right choice!

First of all, the community is incredibly welcoming! Members were introducing themselves immediately and during the class were super positive and motivating. I tend to observe a lot, especially in new situations, and what I found was a group of people who were all about building each other up. Compared to what I’ve read or imagined about some gyms, this was a fantastic benefit.

And my fears about the classes themselves? Totally unfounded! The team is there to help you through each and every part. Explaining proper technique, helping you pick the right weight, making adjustments if necessary all while giving you a healthy dose of encouragement and pushing you to do your best. I think I decided after that very first class I was going to become a full-time member!

RF: WHAT WAS YOUR BIGGEST FITNESS STRUGGLE & HOW DID YOU OVERCOME IT?
Chris: My biggest struggle was the motivation to work out and push myself. When exercising solo, it’s very easy to get into the mindset of “Well…that was good enough”. I also struggled with boredom in my routine, which basically was just negative feedback into that motivation loop. The classes at Results Fitness flipped everything on its head.

First, having the community behind you is a huge motivational factor. Everyone is fun, positive and the enthusiasm they have for being at Results Fitness is contagious. Not only are most of the members workout partners, but they’re friends, and what is better than working out with friends?

In addition, there’s absolutely no need to worry about boredom. You’re doing a different workout every day, with a great combination of strength and conditioning to help you make progress quickly if you put forth the effort. And since there are new exercise programs introduced every month, there is always a new challenge to take on.

“I truly say now that coming into Results is one of the best parts of my day. It’s not a chore. It’s a welcome part of my routine.

I can honestly say I am now in the best shape of my life and every day I am motivated to keep improving.”

RF: THINKING BACK TO WHEN YOU FIRST JOINED, HOW IS YOUR LIFE DIFFERENT NOW?
Chris: I’m less than a year away from the half century mark, and I want to be able to rock some major abs. Seriously, though, because of my improved fitness, I focus better at work, sleep better and overall just feel amazing. Even though my kids are all older, my youngest daughter is autistic with multiple disabilities. Being able to have more energy to keep up with helping her on a daily basis is a huge benefit. In addition, I’m thinking about the investment I’m making in my future health, so I can not only be around for my kids for a long time, but also hope to be a cool and active grandpa!

RF: HOW DO YOU NAVIGATE THAT FEELING OF “DAD-GUILT”?
Chris: I think that small feeling of guilt for taking time out of your day to focus on yourself is always there to some extent.

If I’m healthier and happier, I will be making a better version of myself available to my family, friends and colleagues.

RF: FOR FELLOW DADS TRYING TO FIND TIME FOR PERSONAL HEALTH + FITNESS, WHAT IS YOUR #1 PIECE OF ADVICE?
Chris: My number one piece of advice to the dads out there is making the effort to focus on your health and fitness will pay dividends. You might have to sacrifice something else you enjoy in order to get that time in daily, but the benefits of working out and eating sensibly are very clear. Not only will you look and feel better, but you’ll be more mentally focused and present.

With those benefits, you’ll be able to better keep up with your kids and their boundless energy! And the recent adage that the days are long but the years are short is very true. The kids will be gone and off on their own adventures before you know it, so giving them the best version of yourself now is priceless.

RF: FOR OTHERS READING THIS UNSURE ABOUT WHAT THEY CAN DO, WHAT DO YOU SAY?
Chris: Without hesitation, I recommend they dive in and give Results Fitness a try. RF has classes and programs to help everyone, no matter where you are on your fitness journey. I am energized each day after coming out of an RF class (well, maybe after a little recovery), and the comradery you develop with other members as you all push through a session together is fantastic. The coaches know their stuff, always providing the tools and know how to really make a profound change in your health if you put forth the effort.

You won’t find judging eyes or gym bros at Results Fitness. What you will find is a team of professionals dedicated to helping you succeed and a tribe of friends to inspire you and celebrate your victories.

At Results Fitness, you really do feel like you have an extended family. Not only do we work out together, but we do outside activities together as well. If you are a person struggling with motivation, you’ll find the welcoming environment and friendly faces a huge help in getting you off the couch and in the door, handing you a kettlebell on your way in. I hope we’ll get to welcome you soon!
