There comes a point when losing body fat can suddenly feel WAY harder than it used to.
This is especially true for women over 40.
As a coach, I hear things like this all the time:
“My metabolism is broken.” “Nothing works anymore.” “I swear I woke up 20 pounds heavier.”
“It has to be my hormones.” “Maybe I need to eat less.” “Maybe I need more cardio.”
“Maybe I just shouldn’t eat carbs anymore.”
And after a summer filled with vacations, cookouts, drinks, late nights, and schedules being ALL over the place…
You might be feeling it even more right now.
Your clothes feel tighter, energy is down and your nutrition’s been inconsistent.
And now you’re looking in the mirror thinking “Okay. What the heck happened?!”
Here’s what I want you and every woman over 40 to understand: Your body is NOT broken.
Yes, your body changes as you get older.
Hormonal changes are real!
Maintaining muscle becomes increasingly important.
Sleep may get harder.
Stress can be higher.
And the things you could get away with in your 20s and 30s may not work quite the same way anymore.
But that does NOT mean you can’t lose body fat.
And it certainly doesn’t mean your only options are eating less, cutting out carbs or spending hours doing cardio.
In fact, those are some of the exact strategies that can keep you frustrated and stuck in the cycle of losing weight, gaining it back and starting over again.
You don’t need another diet.
You need to understand what actually drives sustainable fat loss and then you need to consistently DO those things!
So before I give you the six best strategies for fat loss over 40, let’s talk about why this can feel so dang hard in the first place.
WHY DOES FAT LOSS FEEL HARDER AFTER 40?
Your body isn’t broken…but it is changing.
Hormonal changes during your 40s and beyond can affect things like your sleep, energy, hunger, mood, and body composition.
At the same time, life probably looks a whole lot different than it did in your 20s and 30s!
You’re busier and more stressed managing your life: a spouse, kids, work, and aging parents.
Naturally, all of this business and stress equates to less sleep, less time to exercise and more meals on the go.
And finding time to take care of YOU keeps getting pushed further down the list.
Here is where things really start to add up.
You sleep terribly → you’re exhausted → you don’t feel like exercising → you’re hungrier → cooking dinner sounds terrible → takeout wins.
You’re stressed → meal prep doesn’t happen → nutrition gets inconsistent → the glass of wine and snacks at night become a little more frequent.
You miss one workout → then another → your daily movement drops → and suddenly weeks have gone by.
Does one bad night’s sleep or one weekend of eating out make you gain 20 pounds?
Of course not.
But when these behaviors slowly become your “normal” over months, or even years, your body will absolutely change right along with them.
And that is the piece I want you to understand.
Hormones matter.
Aging matters.
But your daily habits, behaviors and choices matter, too.
And that’s actually really good news! Because while you can’t stop yourself from getting older or control every hormonal change, there is still so much you can control.
You can strength train.
You can prioritize protein and improve overall nutrition.
You can drink less alcohol.
You can prioritize sleep.
You can manage stress.
And most importantly…
You can learn how to do these things CONSISTENTLY enough to actually get results!
6 NON-NEGOTIABLE HABITS FOR FAT LOSS:
Let’s make this simple.
Here are 6 habits I want you and every woman over 40 to focus on to lose body fat, get stronger and keep your results!
#1. Eat More Protein: If your only goal is to make the number on the scale smaller, you can lose “weight” lots of ways.
But that’s not really what you want, is it?
You want to lose body fat so that feel more confident and comfortable in your skin and clothes….all while maintaining the muscle that helps you look strong, feel strong and function at your best!
That’s where protein becomes incredibly important.
As you age, maintaining muscle is crucial, and getting enough protein, along with strength training, is how you get the job done!
Protein is also incredibly satisfying, which keeps you fuller and makes it easier to manage hunger and cravings.
Add This Habit Now: Instead of obsessing over everything you need to remove from your diet, start by adding a quality source of protein to each meal.
Think chicken, turkey, beef, fish, eggs, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, beans, and legumes.
#2. Eat the Danm Carbs: Yep. I said it! Carbs are not your enemy.
You do not need to swear off fruit, potatoes, oats, or every piece of bread you’ve ever loved to lose body fat. Your body and brain acutally need carbohydrates to function, especially if you’re active and strength training.
The issue isn’t simply “carbs”.
You don’t gain weight becasue you eat carbs.
The issue is the amount and types of carbs you eat.
Most people overeat highly processed carbs: Cookies. Crackers. Chips. Pretzels. Pastries. Sugary drinks. Desserts.
These foos are easy to overeat becasue they do not keep you satisfied.
Add This Habit Now: Instead of cutting out carbohydrates, choose the right carbs, aka SMART carbs, and stick with recommend portions.
SMART carbs are nutrient-rich foods that does your body and brain good! Think fruit, potatoes, sweet potatoes, beans, oats, whole grains, quinoa, and starchy vegetables. Not only are they packed with nutrients, they provide you with energy for your day, your workout and your brain!
Ladies want to eat a 1/2 cup at every meal and men 1 cup.
#3. Strength Train: This one is huge after 40!
And honestly, it’s amazing to finally see how popular lifting weights has become among women!
Your goal shouldn’t simply be to weigh less. Your goal should be to lose body fat while getting stronger.
Maintaining muscle becomes increasingly important as you age, and strength training is arguably the most effective tool to protect and build muscle mass.
And no, strength training does not mean you need to lift and look like a bodybuilder.
It means challenging your muscles with weights that are appropriate for your body, experience and fitness level.
Add This Habit Now: Make strength training a consistent part of your week.
Aim for at least 3 strength-training sessions per week and work with a qualified coach who can teach you how to train safely, progress appropriately and get the most out of your workouts.
At Results Fitness, that’s exactly what we do! We coach you so you always know what to do, feel safe doing it and get a workout appropriate for your age and fitness level.
#4. Limit Alcohol: I know…probably not the one you wanted to hear.
But if losing body fat and feeling your best are priorities, it’s worth taking an honest look at how often you’re drinking.
Alcohol doesn’t just add calories.
First of all, when you body is busy trying to metabolize and burn off the alcohol you drink, it temporarily stops burning fat. And that ain’t help;ing your fat loss goals!
It also interferes with your sleep, affects your appetite and food choices and makes getting up for that workout the next morning a whole lot less appealing.
And let’s be honest…it’s usually not the glass of wine by itself.
It’s the wine…
PLUS the appetizers.
PLUS dinner.
PLUS dessert.
PLUS the late-night snacks.
PLUS the “I’m too tired to cook” hangover meal the next day.
See how quickly things can snowball?
Add This Habit Now: You don’t necessarily need to swear off alcohol forever. Start by becoming more intentional about how often and how much you’re drinking. If you choose to drink, plan for it, stay hydrated and pay attention to how it affects your sleep, hunger, workouts, and choices the following day.
#5. Get Enough Sleep: You can have the perfect workout program and a refrigerator full of healthy food…
But if you’re exhausted all the time?
Following through becomes a heck of a lot harder.
When you’re tired, what usually happens?
You skip the workout.
You move less.
You don’t feel like cooking.
You reach for whatever food is quickest and easiest.
And making intentional choices suddenly requires WAY more effort.
That’s why sleep isn’t a luxury.
It’s part of your fat-loss strategy.
Add This habit Now: Create an environment that supports better sleep.
Keep your bedroom cool and dark, create a consistent bedtime routine, reduce late-night screen time, and pay attention to late caffeine and alcohol consumption.
Aim to give yourself enough time each night to actually REST and recover.
#6. Manage Your Stress: Work. Kids. Aging parents. Schedules. Finances. Relationships. Your never-ending to-do list.
Life after 40 can come with a lot.
And when you’re chronically stressed, taking care of yourself is often the first thing to go.
You stop meal prepping, miss workouts, move less, snack more, and sleep worse.
And suddenly you’re back to “I’ll start again Monday.”
Managing stress can feel tough because it’s easier to mask stress with food, doom scrolling and alcohol than to add health habits to manage it.
Add This Habit Now: Find a healthy outlet that helps you decompress:
Take a walk outside, try yoga, practice deep breathing, read, take a hot shower, put your phone away, or sit quietly for five freaking minutes.
It doesn’t need to be complicated. You just need healthy ways to manage stress instead of letting stress manage you.
HERE’S THE PART MOST PEOPLE MISS…
You just read six highly effective habits for losing body fat after 40.
And I’m willing to bet none of them completely shocked you.
You probably already knew protein was important.
You knew you should strength train.
You knew sleep mattered.
You knew drinking probably wasn’t helping.
So if you know these things, why is getting results still so dang hard?!
Because knowing what to do and consistentldoing it are two completely different things.

You don’t need another list of foods you’re “allowed” to eat.
You don’t need another restrictive diet.
You don’t need to punish yourself with more cardio.
And you definitely don’t need to be perfect.
You need a plan!
You need to know how to eat for your body and goals, what to do when the weekend hits and strategies for restaurants, vacations and crazy work weeks.
You need strength training.

You need someone holding you accountable to actually do the things you already know you should be doing.
Because great results don’t come from a few “good” days here and there.
They come from having the right plan, following it consistently and having the accountability to keep going when life gets busy.
Read that again.

Not another detox.
Not eliminating carbs.
Not eating as little as possible.
Not doing endless cardio.
