One of the biggest misconceptions in fitness is that modifying an exercise means you’re getting an “easier” workout or somehow falling short of the intended movement.
In reality, exercise modifications are one of the smartest tools for building strength, avoiding unnecessary pain and staying active for years to come!
Whether you struggle with bad knees, a sore back, arthritis, a joint replacement, or an old sports injury, you don’t need to skip workouts or “just push through it.”
You simply need the right version of the exercise!
Every person who walks into Results Fitness has different goals, experience levels, strengths, injuries, and movement abilities.
That’s why there is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all workout here.
Every exercise has options and progressions so that you can perform movements that match your current abilities while still making meaningful progress toward your goals.
Whether you’re brand new to exercise, returning after time away, working around an injury, or simply having an off day, modifications allow you to train safely, confidently, and consistently!
Because the goal isn’t to do the exact same workout as everyone else.
The goal is to do the workout that’s right for you!
In this blog, you’ll learn:
- Why exercise modifications = SMART training.
- How we modify for common aches, pains and injuries.
- Why personalized workouts = BETTER results!
- How Results Fitness helps YOU train safely and confidently!
Modifications Are Smart Training
Many people hesitate to ask for modifications because they worry about appearing weak or less capable.
However, experienced coaches and fitness professionals understand that modifying an exercise is the smart and effective choice!
Here’s why: the purpose of any workout is creating the right training stimulus for you while minimizing unnecessary risk.
One of the greatest benefits of exercise modifications is that they keep you moving!
Rather than putting your health on hold every time something aches or hurts, modifications allow you to stay consistent, support your recovery and continue making progress safely.
Fitness is a lifelong journey and exercising is something we want to enable you to continue doing forever! Some days your body may be ready for more challenging movements, while other days it may need additional support.
Modifications allow your workout to meet you where you are!
Modifications for Chronic Injuries
Living with arthritis, chronic back pain or a joint injury doesn’t mean exercise is off limits.
In fact, strength training is one of the best ways to manage your symptoms, improve mobility and help prevent future issues!
The movement itself usually isn’t the problem.
The key is finding the right version of that movement for your body; exactly what we, as your certified, trained and experienced coaches, are here to do!
Here is a summary of how we modify for common chronic injuries:
#1. Arthritis: can cause joint pain, stiffness and reduced range of motion, especially in your knees, hips and hands.
While high-impact exercises like jumping may aggravate symptoms, that doesn’t mean you have to stop exercising. Instead, we simply modify the movement for you!
For example: replacing jump squats with bodyweight squats to a comfortable depth or sit-to-stands from a chair still strengthens your legs, improves mobility and builds confidence without placing unnecessary stress on your joints.
#2. Chronic back pain: common injury, especially as you age.
Some days are better than others, but movement is often one of the best things you can do to alleviate that pain and move better.
Depending on the cause of your discomfort, modifications may include seated exercises for additional support, reducing your range of motion or focusing on core strengthening exercises that improve spine stability and reduce pain over time.
For example: If squatting down (performing a deadlift) causes discomfort, we may shorten your range of motion by elevating the weight on a box so you do not have to squat down as low. If getting up and down from the floor is uncomfortable, exercises can be performed on a bench or elevated surface instead.
#3. Joint injuries & replacements: Maybe it’s an old injury from sports that never completely healed, or you’ve had a knee, hip or shoulder replacement.
When it comes to joint injuries, high-impact movements or heavy weights may not be appropriate. Instead, your workout may emphasize mobility, rehabilitation exercises, controlled movement patterns, lighter weights, or additional support until your body is ready for more.
For example: following a knee or hip replacement, lunges or getting up and down from the floor can be challenging. We may use TRX straps, a box, or a thick pad to provide extra support while allowing you to perform the movement comfortably and safely.
By making smart modifications, you can continue building strength, improving function and making steady progress while respecting your body’s current abilities.
Outside the gym, this means a better, less painful and MORE enjoyable life doing what you love!
Modifications For Acute Injuries
Not every ache or injury is something you’ve lived with for years.
Sometimes it’s as simple as tweaking your back while unloading groceries, pulling a muscle doing yard work, slipping on the ice, or waking up with a stiff neck after sleeping in a funny position.
These short-term (acute) injuries often require temporary changes to your workout versus stopping exercise altogether.
For example, if you’ve recently strained your shoulder, pressing weights overhead or repetitive reaching may make it feel worse.
Instead, we will substitute pain-free exercises like rows and band work to improve joint mobility that doesn’t aggravate your shoulder. As your strength and mobility improve, pressing based exercises can gradually be added back into your program.
The same goes for a sore back or tight hips.
Instead of skipping the gym, gentle movement, stretching, mobility work, and exercises that improve your core strength can help reduce stiffness and get you feeling better.
In many cases, movement is exactly what your body needs and why as your coaches, we always encourage you to come and let us modify as needed!
Even something like a rolled ankle or sore knee doesn’t mean your workout is over. We can simply shift the focus to exercises that don’t place stress on the injured area while continuing to strengthen the rest of your body.
Personalization Creates Better Results
Exercise modifications aren’t just for injuries; they’re part of creating the best workout for you!
No two people walk into Results Fitness with the same goals, fitness level or movement history.
One person may be brand new to strength training, while another has been exercising for years.
One person may need extra support with balance or mobility, while another is ready for a greater challenge.
That’s why the best workout isn’t about everyone doing the exact same exercise.
It’s about everyone doing the exercise that’s right for your body!
