The Missing Piece of Every GLP-1 Plan

Let’s talk about the elephant in the room…

(or, more accurately, the injection pen in a lot of medicine cabinets these days):

GLP-1 medications.

If you’re taking one, considering one, or know someone who is, you’ve probably seen just how effective they can be.

The weight comes off.

The food noise quiets down.

Cravings become easier to manage.

That’s a big deal.

And let me be clear…I’m not here to tell you GLP-1s are “bad.”

They can be an effective tool for improving health and making weight loss finally feel attainable.

But there’s another side of the story that doesn’t get talked about nearly enough.

Because while a GLP-1 can help you lose weight, it can’t dictate whether that weight comes from body fat or muscle.

And it certainly can’t teach you how to eat, strength train or build the lifestyle habits needed to build and preserve muscle mass, improve your health, build strength, and keep the weight off once you stop.

Without these habits, you will lose weight which yes, leaves you ‘smaller’ on the scale, but also weaker, with a slower metabolism and no strategy for keeping the weight off.

That’s exactly why this conversation matters! In this blog you are learning:

  • The biggest risks with GLP-1s, plus what to do about it.
  • The 2 non-negotiables when using GLP-1s.
  • What happens to your body when you stop.

WHAT’S AT RISK

GLP-1s work by reducing your appetite; exactly what they’re designed to do.

The challenge?

When you’re not hungry, it’s easy to unintentionally eat too little.

And when you eat too little, you often fall short on the nutrients your body still needs every single day to function, recover, build muscle, stay healthy, and feel your best, including:

  • Protein
  • Fiber
  • Healthy fats
  • Vitamins and minerals

Just because you’re eating less doesn’t mean your body needs less nutrition. When your body doesn’t get the fuel it needs, you increase your risk of:

  • Losing muscle instead of just body fat
  • A slower metabolism
  • Feeling weak, tired, and mentally foggy
  • Poor workout recovery
  • Reduced bone and muscle health over time
  • Nutrient deficiencies

Yes, the scale may be dropping, but not all of that weight is body fat. Research shows a whopping 25-40% of  weight lost on these meds can come from lean muscle mass.

This is especially true if you’re not eating enough protein and strength training.

Let me be clear: losing muscle, especially as you age, is not a good thing.

I do NOT want that for you.

As a coach who has worked with hundreds of adults, I’ve learned weight loss usually isn’t the entire goal.  Most people want to:

  • Feel stronger
  • Look leaner and more “toned”
  • Have more energy
  • Feel better in their clothes
  • Stay independent as they age
  • Keep up with their kids, grandkids, hobbies, travel, and everyday life

These goals are not weight loss goals; they’re body-composition and quality-of-life goals.

And muscle is what helps you achieve them!

Muscle isn’t just for bodybuilders. Muscle supports your metabolism, strength, balance, bones, joints, appearance, mobility, and ability to remain capable as you age.

Lose too much muscle and you don’t just become lighter. You become weaker, and before you know it:

  • Carrying groceries feels heavier
  • Lifting your kids or grandkids feels harder
  • Getting up from the floor becomes a struggle
  • Travel and everyday activities become more exhausting
  • The body you were trying to improve becomes less capable

That is not aging well and why our goal as your coaches at Results Fitness is never simply to help you weigh less. Our goal is to help you lose body fat while preserving muscle, building strength and improving your balance, mobility, coordination, and confidence!

THE GLP-1 NON-NEGOTIABLES

The good news? Significant muscle loss does not have to be inevitable!

There are two essential strategies for supporting lean muscle mass when losing weight: regular strength training and proper nutrition, especially protein!

1. Strength Training:  Lifting weights isn’t optional as you age, especially when taking a GLP-1.

Regular strength training tells your body “Keep this muscle, I need it!”.  Without that signal, your body has no reason to preserve muscle wand why you inevitably lose it.

Aim to strength train 3-4 times each week, using challenging weights (challening is relative to you).  Think of it this way: each set should feel difficult enough that you could perform only 1-3 more quality repetitions before needing to stop.

Cardio based activities like walking, running, and cycling are great for your heart and overall health but will not preserve or buld muscle mass. Sames goes for yoga, pilates and barre.

2. Proper Nutrition: You will likely feel less hungry on a GLP-1, but your body still needs proper fuel.

One of the biggest mistakes people make is assuming: “I’m barely eating…so I must be doing great.”

Not necessarily.

Your muscles still need protein.  Your body still needs fiber.  Your bones still need vitamins and minerals.

You still need enough calories to recover, function and feel your best.

Eating less isn’t automatically better. Eating enough of the right foods is! That means prioritizing:

  • Protein
  • Fiber
  • Whole foods
  • Fruits and vegetables
  • Healthy fats
  • Hydration

WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR BODY WHEN YOU STOP

This is the part many people overlook.

A GLP-1 can make eating less easier, but it doesn’t teach you:

  • How to build balanced meals
  • How much protein your body needs
  • How to strength train
  • How to grocery shop
  • How to navigate vacations, holidays, restaurants, and real life
  • How to build habits you can sustain for years

If you don’t learn healthier habits while taking a GLP-1, it’s easy to slip back into old routines once the medication stops.

And that’s when the weight and body fat begins to creep back on.

Research shows it’s very commong to regain a substantial amount of weight after stopping a GLP-1.  That doesn’t mean the medication failed.

What it means is the medication and your lifestyle need to work together. The medication can help manage your appetite, but your daily habits ensure you you protect lean muscle mass, improve your health and maintain your results.

Bottom Line:  GLP-1s can be an incredible tool but they’re exactly that…a sinlge tool…not the entire solution.

Your training, nutrition and daily habits determine the quality and sustainability of your results.

As a coach seeing firsthand the adverse side effects of taking these meds without making any other lifestyle changes, I urge you to use this opportunity to do more than lose weight. Use it to:

  • Build muscle.
  • Learn how to fuel your body and goals.
