The beginning of any new year is typically when folks not only craft resolutions but reflect on the past year to strategize how they want to write their next chapter. When I reflect on 2016, a large portion of my thinking is concentrated on my time spent at the beloved fitness haven, Results Fitness (RF). And, in doing so, I can’t help but wonder what it’s been that has kept me engaged as a member for more than four years. Because, although we as humans are creatures of habit, the grass is always greener. We like shiny new things and crave change – change of pace, change of scenery. Prime example, my fitness regimen prior to RF. I could never find my sweet spot or any routine that kept my attention longer than a few months. At first, I was a cardio junkie – I will run ‘til I can’t feel my legs and successfully burn one million calories. Did somebody say Zumba? I like to dance! Then it was hot yoga – I can see the beads of sweat dripping off my nose. This is great! I will literally sweat off the pounds until I mold into a sculpted masterpiece of muscle. Please know I am not knocking either (I still incorporate cardio + yoga into my fitness routine). My point is this: I found myself getting bored. I was always wondering what else was out there because I wasn’t seeing the progress I wanted nor did I feel stronger – mentally or physically. It was easy to skip a class or skip a run. There was zero accountability and no external support to help keep me focused, motivated and on track. Enter Results Fitness. #gamechanger.
JOURNEY INTO THE UNKNOWN.
Disclaimer: I only tested out RF as a courtesy after the generous coaches donated a gift card for an event I was planning. My initial thought was “yeah right”. My older and wiser sister, Carlene, an RF member, had been trying to bait me for months but the phrase “boot camp” was polarizing. I had never done anything that sounded so physically challenging (I went to OU) and preemptively decided it wasn’t for me. However, as a fundraiser by trade, I knew the importance of saying “thanks” and showing appreciation so out of pure obligation, I finally enrolled in the RF 30-Day Experience and have never looked back.
ABOUT MY JOURNEY.
My journey with Results Fitness probably shares many similarities with most RF members regardless if they are newer to the community or a veteran. It started with learning the basic fundamentals – trying to grasp how it all works. “Ok, it’s a 40 minute group class training. We switch stations every so often. Gotta do this foam rolling thing. Good thing we get rest breaks – I’m going to die!”.
In the beginning, I had no idea what I was doing. I was just doing my best to show up, look the part and execute accordingly. As time progressed, there were small but important victories. I became familiar with the warm-ups, I knew what to expect when it came to group class and look out! I even recognized some of the exercises by name! Over the course of several years, I transitioned from doing the bare minimum into becoming fully engrained with everything this incredible team of dedicated and compassionate professionals preached to achieve a sustainable, healthy way of living.
For starters, I started listening -I mean really listening – to what they had to say (they really do know what they are talking about). I tested out some of their theories when it came to incorporating dietary changes and making bigger “gainz” because although I was seeing progress, I was still falling short of what I wanted. I was still in the mindset of “I can eat two donuts now ‘cause I’m working out later”. Hey, coaches – what’s that part again about not out-training your diet?
I started with diet and gave the whole eat protein + veggies at every meal a real chance. Holy sh*t, kids… it works! This was the catalyst that put me on a whole new level when it came to training and progress. I felt better, I was seeing more subtle (yet important) changes and hello! I discovered I LOVE vegetables! It really forced me to challenge all my previous beliefs about the relationship between diet and exercise (most of which were wrong). At the end of the day, we all inherently know the benefits of healthy, clean eating but it’s definitely just one of those things we struggle with. The good news it that when you give it a test run, you will be pleasantly surprised with what it renders not only physically, but mentally as well. Because of RF, my diet has drastically evolved since first joining. I have become well versed in best practices when it comes to diet and more importantly, little by little, I am learning how to leverage diet + exercise to maximize results and get the most out of what I put in. It is definitely a work in progress but something that has greatly shaped my perspective and success when it comes to meeting personal goals and gaining a full appreciation of making better choices for a healthier lifestyle.
The second catalyst was exploring the coveted world of semi-private training. I tested these bad boys out because I craved that extra something to propel my training forward and test my limits both physically and mentally. I initially enrolled in semi-private training in tandem with the last Rise Up 8-week challenge to increase intensity short term but, here I am – still going strong and loving everything about what these personalized packages of fitness TLC have to offer. The cool factor of the semi-private training is being in this moment of self-realization and doing things you deemed impossible. The mental “gainz” have been equally important as well – semi’s are like an exclusive “behind the scenes” crash course in understanding the formalities + science behind every exercise + movement. Why is this important? ‘Cause when you do it right, it’s most effective!
I want to emphasize that everything I have accomplished, learned or had to overcome took time – A LOT of time. Change does not happen overnight and the struggles are very real. Nothing worth attaining is ever easy and when it comes to achieving goals, the onus rests on each of us. However, we cannot get from A- Z riding solo and RF has proven it’s “who” you are with for the ride that impacts “how” you get there. At the end of the day, RF is more than just the four walls of a gym. It is a community of what you need to get you to where you are going, regardless of where you currently stand.
SO NOW WHAT?
I started at Results Fitness with no expectations, minimum experience when it came to any sort of physical training and no reason to believe this would turn into anything meaningful or long-term. At that point in my life, exercise played a small, unimportant role. Aside from doing it because it was good for me or because I wanted to “look good”, I never had developed a full appreciation of what it all really meant. This is because no one ever took a genuine interest, the time or energy to educate me and paint the big picture stuff. My experience elsewhere was never about me. It was just about showing up, doing what I was told and going home. I was a gypsy soul because no one invested in me so why would I ever invest in them? There is absolutely no value in that and without value, what’s the point? Given all this and my experience with other facilities, you can imagine why for me, that first week at RF was just that – one quick week I suspected would fizzle.
Jokes on me. Four years later, I have transformed from an illiterate, unengaged exercise nomad, to a full blown health +fitness (junkie) enthusiast. I have officially become that girl who makes excuses on why I CANNOT miss my workout. Something I will never be ashamed to admit.
So, in reflecting back over the past several years, I can confidently say my time at RF has been time well spent. We make changes and accept challenges as we are ready and to me, that is the core of what Results Fitness is. As you evolve on your journey, they evolve with you. The RF team has been and continues to be the catalyst I need to continue moving forward. It will always be about long-term investment on both parts; which makes the journey real, genuine, interesting and ALWAYS challenging (physically + mentally). I doubt there will ever come a time but, if for one split second think you are bored, remember these keywords: sled finishers. There is never a dull moment at RF and, just when you think you’ve seen it all – the costumes get smaller, more revealing and much tighter.
And that is why, after all these years, my haven remains RF. Year five here I come!
