Over the past week or so, I’ve gotten a lot of compliments and questions from my RF family such as, “You look great! What are you doing differently?” So I guess it’s time to make this official…I’m currently training to compete in World Natural Bodybuilding Federation (WNBF) Bikini on September 24th at the Cardinal Classic in Youngstown, Ohio!
The idea of training for a physique based competition has been rolling around in the back of my mind for a few years now. I have a couple of friends that I met while living in Columbus that compete and seeing their Facebook posts was always awe-inspiring. For years I allowed my self-doubt and busy life style to get in the way. Well, my life hasn’t gotten any simpler, but I’ve finally broken through the barrier of my own insecurity and said, “Let’s do this!” A recent big birthday with the realization that I’m not getting any younger, a scare concerning my own health and well-being, in addition to the continual support from the fantastic RF coaches are the biggest reasons why I’ve finally mentally been able to commit to this goal.
About a month ago when I first approached Josh and Dane that I wanted to compete this year they didn’t even bat an eye or ask me, “Are you sure?” They knew all along that I could physically do this. They never doubted me. Instead they got right down to business planning my workouts, getting my measurements and taking conference calls with my friend Kendra, a WNBF pro who is acting as my nutrition/competition coach.
I’ll be the first to admit that this hasn’t been easy. I have a very specific meal plan that I follow. I’m not joking when I say specific either. I’ve been eating the exact same thing every day and my new best friend is my food scale. Surprisingly though, it is more food than I’ve ever eaten before, and I’m never truly hungry. (This coming from the girl with a bad case of the hangries! Just ask my husband Chris!) I do yearn for certain foods such as ice cream, pasta, pizza, etc. but I’ve learned that just a tiny taste from someone’s plate is enough to satisfy even the strongest cravings. I still go out to eat and socialize, while ensuring that my food choices fit within my diet plan, and if I cheat, I just get right back on track with my next meal. No one’s perfect.
My workout style has changed dramatically too. Right now it’s all about hypertrophy training with heavy weights in order to build up my shoulders and my butt (bikini is all about the booty!). Josh, Dane and Matt have really pushed me because they know what I’m capable of even before I do. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I’d be doing 145lb RDLs or 205lb hip thrusters! I lost my fear of free weights real fast and learned that the only thing holding me back is me.
I track my weight daily, take progress photos every 2 weeks and my measurements monthly. The numbers don’t lie…this program works! Everything that the Results Fitness crew has been preaching for years is gospel! Unfortunately, it took me awhile to really get motivated and listen. Some of life’s circumstances had to kick me in the butt to get me off my phone drooling over my friend’s social media accounts of their competition photos. I’ve already learned so much about myself and the people around me. Everyone at Results Fitness is capable of anything they put their minds to. You just need to find what motivates you, make a plan, follow it, and surround yourself with positive, supportive people. I wouldn’t be able to do this alone. My family, my co-workers, and especially the Results Fitness coaches are going to be instrumental in my success. I’m very blest to have you all in my life!
I hope to keep everyone updated throughout my journey! Feel free to ask me questions, and I’d love to have everyone’s support on competition day, September 24th!
Kelly is a great example of what Coach Matt wrote about last week, training with a purpose. Read that post HERE.
